Before turning to screenwriting, Robert Orr traveled through Bosnia and Croatia during the Yugoslavian Civil War, working first as a photographer and later as an aid worker helping to rebuild homes damaged from fighting. He also worked at the massive DaDaab refugee camp on the Kenyan/Somali border.
